Meet Our Team
RN, MRA, CRRN, CCM, CLCP
Doreen left Grossmont Hospital in 1989 with a goal to provide continuous care to the patients she had seen with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. She’s been the CEO of Rehab Care for 25 years helping to create an industry out of nothing. Born in Manhattan, she grew up in Amsterdam and lived throughout the United States before coming to San Diego in 1979. Doreen loves Amsterdam for obvious reasons but mostly enjoys anyplace she cruises to. and is a big dessert/chocolate fan.
Diane Ward was the very first employee hired by RCC at its founding, spending over 25 years with the company as a life care planner. She and Doreen became friends when both worked together at a local hospital. Diane has 32 years of experience in Rehab which gives her an amazing wealth of knowledge for the betterment of our patients and staff. Diane loves dessert above all else, specifically Milk Chocolate (has to be milk!) and Jelly Beans. Diane looks forward to visiting Oahu, Hawaii, where she was born and raised.
RCC’s second employee, Renee Swain has spent 18 years as a nurse case manager providing excellent service to our patients. With 32 years of nursing experience in fields such as orthopedics, neurology, rehabilitation and managed health care, the Indio native has a wealth of knowledge and experience which she utilizes for the well-being of our patients. She loves the comforts of either Soul or Mexican food (not combined) and dreams of being either on a beach in South Africa or in Salvador, Brazil.
A native San Diegan, Haydee Pina spent the first five years after college as an elementary school teacher. She eventually moved onto the medical field taking on a variety of roles before spending the past 12 years with Rehab Care. Haydee is our Case Coordinator and provides support to our case management patients while also working with fiduciaries/special need trusts & in marketing. She loves seafood and homemade Italian and while she’s a voracious traveler, she plans on adding two places she’s never traveled to the list, New York City and Chicago.

Originally from Zurich, Switzerland, Andrea Nebel has been a nurse for over twenty years. She moved to San Diego in 2004. She’s been with Rehab Care since 2015 and is one of RCC’s Certified Life Care Planners. She also provides Case Management services to our clients. Andrea is fluent in Swiss and German, and able to provide translation services when needed. She has two daughters, loves any Japanese food—especially sushi—and is most at home on any beach.
Maria joined RCC as a Life Care Planner and is the only nurse on our team with licenses from three different countries. After graduating from nursing school in Biñan City, Maria worked as a Research Nurse in Manila. From there she spent three years as a Staff Nurse in Laguna, The Philippines, then two years as a Registered Nurse in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia before moving with her family to San Diego. She brings over a decade of experience, and expertise in writing and research, to our team. Maria loves carbs but specifically pasta and cakes and looks forward to touring Europe soon.
A San Diego Native, who lived all over the world as a navy brat, Tana joined the Case Management team in mid-2018. She brings over 19 years of nursing experience, primarily with Surgical ICU & Trauma, and spent most of her career at UCSD Hillcrest and Sharp Grossmont. Tana’s favorite place to travel is Italy. She loves Mexican food and The Rolling Stones.
Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Lindsay and her family came to San Diego in 2014. A graduate of Saint Luke’s College of Health Science, Lindsay has experience with Saint Luke’s Hospital & Sharp Hospital in their Neurosurgical and Medical ICU as well as Loma Linda University’s Hospital. She joined RCC in early 2019 and has become a fantastic member of the case management team. Her favorite food is chocolate and she’d like to be anywhere she can find white sand and a cold drink.
Originally from Germany, Katja moved to Maryland at age 12. She spent 14 years working with various medical units in and around DC including; the Medical Surgery & PACU Units at Holy Cross hospital in Silver Spring and the Emergency Department at Laurel Regional Hospital and at Montgomery General. Prior to joining RCC in early 2019, she spent five years as a field case manager in San Diego. Katja brings a wealth of knowledge across multiple disciplines to the Case Management team. She wants to travel around California more and her favorite foods are Subway and Thai food.
A graduate of San Diego State University’s School of Social Work, Samantha is the first Social Worker hired by RCC. She joined our Case Management team in late 2018 and assists with coordinating our patient’s care and helping them apply and receive benefits. Her career has been focused on helping those in need including serving as a Family Advocate with the YMCA, an Employment Specialist with The Union of Pan Asian Communities and an Interventionist with ABA Works. Samantha looks forward to traveling through Europe in the future and loves Mariscos.
Norma Avalos is Rehab Care’s Office Manager; basically she is responsible for keeping the office running smoothly. She is also the point person for our clients and patients which means her cheerful voice and sunny disposition will be one of the first things you encounter upon calling our company. The Tijuana native has been at RCC for 9 years and prior to that she moved up the ranks at an OBGYN office, becoming their office manager for over ten years. She loves Mexican food and dreams of being on a beach in Costa Rica with a drink in her hands.
Marlene DeFreitas is originally from Trinidad & Tobago in the West Indies & came to the US in 1989. She is RCC’s Administrative Clerk responsible for all billing and collections and has been in that role for 13 years. Prior to that she spent 13 years with another rehab organization where she was also the Billing Specialist. She has two kids as well as six grand kids, loves Caribbean style Curry and longs to visit Fort Lauerdale, FL again.
Loren Casuto, Esq.
Director of Operations
Loren Casuto basically grew up around Rehab Care. After spending three years practicing in the Delaware Valley, he returned home to Southern California to join RCC. As Director of Operations he handles most internal affairs such as HR, Collections & legal matters as well as marketing. He loves a good steak but is a foodie at heart and wishes he could be either in French Polynesia or Amsterdam, where he has family.
Stephanie joined RCC in mid-2018 as our Administrative Assistant. She received an A.A. in Liberal Studies from Mt. San Jacinto College & plans to pursue a Bachelor’s in Literature & Writing from CSU San Marcos. Prior to joining the team, Stephanie spent time working as a clerk and associate at a local legal office and the Ron H. Roberts Public Library in Temecula. Being part of a “movie-quoting” family, she spends a lot of her free time watching movies, with her all-time favorite being Almost Famous. She enjoys hiking, spending time in nature, and always looks forward to adventures with her two pups, Mumford & Lila.
Mayra spends the majority of her day providing legal support to our team; however, that is only the tip of the iceberg. Mayra spent nine years with Legal Aid Society in Chula Vista as a Paralegal, assisting clients who were seeking restraining orders. She is a graduate from Maric College with a degree in Paralegal Studies as well as a licensed realtor and notary. A native San Diegan, Mayra loves hiking and any time at the beach. Her favorite foods are Peruvian and Seafood (especially with wine) and looks forward to new travel experiences.
Sandra joined Rehab Care in 2018 as a billing assistant and brings financial & medical assistant experience to the team. A graduate of the PIMA Medical Institute, she also spent two years with the San Diego Business Journal as an accounting assistant and two years with the Hilton San Diego. Her favorite foods are sushi and ice cream and though her travel list is long, the top two destinations are Bali and Tahiti.
